Single-Occupancy Bathrooms for All Genders

Mayor de Blasio signed legislation into law that requires all public single-occupant toilet rooms, like those at restaurants and bars, are made available for use by persons of any sex.

All existing single-occupant toilet rooms must comply with the law by January 1, 2017. Any toilet rooms that are newly-built before January 1, 2017 must comply as soon as they are complete.

A "single-occupant toilet room" is described as a toilet room with no more than one water closet and no more than one urinal.

Public single-occupant toilet rooms must post a legible sign that a single-occupant toilet room is for all sexes.  Signs shall be readily visible and located near the entrance to each toilet facility.  This law does not require physical alteration of a single-occupant toilet room except for the posting and maintenance of appropriate signage.
